What is a VPN protocol?
A VPN protocol is one of the most important things for a VPN. It creates a secure connection between your device and the VPN servers, hiding your activity from prying eyes on the internet.
Time-tested
Atlas VPN still employs IPSec/IKEv2 — one of the most widely trusted and accepted VPN protocols on the market used by other top VPNs. However, we always strive to follow the current advancements in both the technology and security fields.
Next-generation
To provide you with a wider protocol selection, Atlas VPN has also added support for WireGuard, the latest and most advanced VPN protocol there is. WireGuard aims to be more modern, simpler, faster, and more secure than existing legacy protocols.

How are VPN protocols different?
VPN protocols determine exactly how data is routed through a connection. What makes each protocol different is its specialization.
L2TP/IPsec
Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol (L2TP), frequently paired with security protocol IPsec, is a protocol that creates VPN tunnels. It is relatively safe, but other modern protocols, such as OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec, and WireGuard, are typically better than L2TP/IPSec.
OpenVPN
OpenVPN is an open-source protocol using virtually unbreakable AES-256 bit key encryption with 2048-bit RSA authentication and a 160-bit SHA1 hash algorithm. OpenVPN lets you unlock blocked content.
IKEv2
IKEv2 is a common VPN tunneling protocol known for being fast and stable. This protocol excels at switching connections across network types from WiFi to cellular.

What is WireGuard?
WireGuard is an open-source VPN protocol made for ease-of-use by delivering fast speeds while staying secure. In contrast to older and highly complex protocols, WireGuard was built with only the most necessary features.
