VPN speed up a fix for iPhone’s 11 location tracking bug

Can VPN speed such a process up? The new Apple iPhone 11 version was released back in September 2019. Yet, the company must fix a interesting flaw.

In December 2019, KrebsOnSecurity security researcher Brian Krebs discovered that iPhone 11 Pro is collecting mysterious location data when technically it shouldn’t. Even if the location data is disabled for all apps individually, you can still notice the small arrow icon which indicates the opposite.

Krebs contacted Apple to provide information about the possible bug discovered on the newest operating system version. Later it appeared that Apple support forums have plenty of topics raised about the location privacy issues since September, hence, the problem is known.

Upon further investigation, Apple acknowledged the location tracking bug. They confirmed that the flaw is caused due to the implementation of Ultra Wideband chips. The chip is like a more spatially aware version of Bluetooth, allowing iOS features like AirDrop to function more precisely. “Ultra-wideband technology is an industry-standard technology and is subject to international regulatory requirements that require it to be turned off in certain locations,” said Apple in its statement. A complete list of countries where UWB can be used is here.

Now Apple is testing a feature to let iPhone 11 users completely turn off location tracking. The latest beta for iOS 13.3.1 has a separate toggle in the system settings to turn off Ultra Wideband features. The exact date when the feature will be fully available for everyone is unclear. Since it’s already in beta, it can’t be too far off.

How can VPN speed the case up

Apple assured that the UWB feature does not collect user location data rather than only checks it on-device level. According to them, the data would be difficult to compromise. But for people who really value their security, that might not be enough. This is where a high speed VPN should kick in. The extra layer of security is significant. Your location is not the only thing that others might want to find out about you.

Using a Virtual Private Network is the best option to hide your location. By connecting to a remote VPN server, you can make yourself appear as if you are browsing from a different location. There comes a huge bonus on top of that. The fastest VPN for streaming will allow you to access various geo-restricted websites and TV shows.

There is no need to look for what VPN has the fastest speeds if you wish to hide your location from the outside world. But if speed is important to your online activities, you should pick a VPN that doesn’t slow down your Internet to a crawl. You can measure it easily by doing a VPN speed comparison test with and without VPN connection enabled.
